My Summer 2013 Reads

By | May 30, 2013

bksbksbks-1

I haven’t had much time to read recently and I miss grabbing a book and losing myself in words dressed up in ink and dancing between the pages. This summer three of my favourite authors had new novels out and I know, I just know, that a nice reading  hibernation period is just around the corner.

I read a chapter from Read more »

Dinner at C-Omar in the Avenues

By | April 23, 2013

cospd-022-1

A while ago I’ve been walking in the Souk district of the Avenues mall when I saw a boarded up coming soon restaurant under the name of “C-Omar”. C is a word used in Egypt for mister and if I’m not mistaken there is a black and white movie by the name of C-Omar.  Therefore C-Omar was clearly a new Egyptian restaurant and judging by the modern looking design and my love for Egyptian food, I knew I will keep an eye out for its opening.  Read more »

Teaser: Guess Who? The Name Begins With a D… ;)

By | May 20, 2012

Its… Dathra! Shraykom feha? Still a little shy and won’t come out completely. I promised that by mid May I’d have an announcement regarding Dathra. Well, look at the picture above? Guess who that is :p

Yes, Dathra fans, the book is coming out so soon. Now I have a Dathra I can gaze at thanks to the talented f2o who is also a Dathra fan! However, I cannot maintain a blog + finish out the book in time for the summer holidays therefore I will be on hiatus for around a week to ten days. I have scheduled some posts for those ten days but I will not be able to approve/reply on all comments or emails or post about new things as I am putting all my energy into Dathra’s book 2 release.

Stay tuned… ma boga shay! See you soon insha2 Allah :)

Fearless Encounters Premier in Cinescape

By | May 9, 2012

I was invited yesterday to attend an exclusive preview of one of Kuwait’s most recent movies “Fearless Encounters”, directed by Mr. Talal Showaish-Salem. Fearless Encounters is a 55 minute documentary honoring the Kuwaiti Oil Firefighting Team.

In case you haven’t heard about the Kuwaiti Oil Fires, they were set a light when the Sadam Hussein ordered them to be burnt before the liberation during the Iraqi invation of Kuwait in 1990, resulting in one of the biggest crimes against nature and turning Kuwait’s sky black for a long time.

The footage from this film were shot 20 years ago by the Kuwaiti filmmaker, Talal Showaish-Salem, who spent 6 weeks with the team in the horrific inferno. Telling the inside untold story of the Kuwaiti oil firefighters’ heroic Fearless Encounters. A great thing to watch given that I personally can’t remember much regarding that matter. I do remember an woman engineer, Sarah Akbar, being in the papers back then, that’s all.

I was really looking forward to go, unfortunately by night fall I was feeling so ill I couldn’t get off my couch so sadly I had to stay home. However, I cannot wait to see the movie. I love documentaries, specifically local ones where people work together to do good for the country. It fills me with an amazing sense of pride and I cannot help but supress my tears. It reminds me that there is still hope, wel deniya lel7een ebkhair.

Fearless encounters will be shown in Cinescape theaters across Kuwait starting Thursday 10 May 2012. I can’t wait to go see it. I urge you to go, so you can see, you can feel, you can think, and you can teach the new generation of a past that must not be forgotten.

Thank you Talal Showaish-Salem for the invitation o qawwak Allah.

Ramadan: A 100 days and Counting…

By | April 11, 2012

Someone who obviously loves Ramadan very much has made the world know today that Ramadan is only a 100 days away! Horray!

I love Ramadan. I think its the best time of year. I love the fatoosh on futoor table, the tea estekanas after futoor sleeping on the couch with the droopy eye lids. I love our pre-futoor ritual of watching the IT Ramadan show and commenting on it on Twitter. Even though this year we might watch it via Instagram etha Allah 3a6ana 3omor o 9a7a o 3afiya insha2 Allah.

Ya rab et3oodna ya rab. This year its going to be on 19 July! 2 days after my birthday which I suppose I can disguise as a friendly graish 😉 I was actually born in 5 Ramadan in the year 1980 so next year insah2 Allah my birthday will be during Ramadan. I wonder if it will be on the fifth 3ad? Allah y36ena 3omor o y3oodna!

Are you excited? I am. I truly am. I think I will start fasting now just to start living the Ramadan atmosphere.

Announcement: Gloria Jeans Coffee Making Course and Competition

By | January 19, 2012

Remember my Coffee post yesterday when I said I was setting the mood for an announcement (post)?

As part of my new year’s resolutions since 2011 was attending a coffee course that I’ve learned about in Dubai. It was a course held on Saturday for a few hours where you learn about proper coffee making. More of a crash course.

At the beginning of this year I was contacted by Gloria Jean’s Coffee Company offering me a proper coffee making course! Five days long, one hour per session where I learn all about coffee from the beginning. How awesome is that? Needless to say I lunged at the opportunity and I, Danderma the coffee-holic, am going to be learning all about coffee starting next Sunday 😀

Now this is going to be fun for both me and you, my dear readers! First, every day after my course I will post about it PLUS post about a question for a grand quiz. Interested readers will answer that question. Five days and five questions later I will be having a “graduation” day where I will be able to invite people to and prepare them their drinks myself!!! Of course then I will be a trained coffee maker! Plus, the winner of the quiz will be announced then :)

Thank you Gloria Jeans coffee for such a unique opportunity! We need to have more similar courses and activities here in Kuwait! Can’t wait for Sunday to arrive now.

Stay tuned my dear readers. Coffee-holics, you are in for a coffee filled ride! Keep an eye on my blog or on Gloria Jean’s Facebook page (link) and see 😉

Competitions: Win a Philips Lamea

By | December 7, 2011

Two years ago as I was browsing Boots aisles in the UK I stumbled upon a new product called “Philips Lumea”. A compact handheld light emitting device that can be used at home to remove excess hair once and for all.

At first I was skeptic. It must be a sham or something like it. Could it be? A laser like hair removal at home? It was simply too good to be true. The price tag of Read more »
