One of my birthday resolutions for this year was to become healthier, not for the sake of weight loss but for my overall well-being. I’m not twenty one anymore, not even 30, and this means my supply of youthful health is running out fast and the time has come to be smart about my choices. I remember an old man selling ice cream out of a cart in the street that we met last year. I wanted an ice cream -well it’s me after all- and my husband didn’t. The old man, with his beautiful toothless smile and deeply wrinkled face, told my husband to eat an ice cream while he still could. Read more »

Each time I’m in Dubai there must be a list of newly opened places I’ve never been before to explore. On the top of my list was The Farm restaurant recommended by many people I know, doing so while gushing about the breathtaking scenery and the amazing food. Since I was there for the Eid holiday and the first breakfast after Ramadan is my number one breakfast of the year, I knew I it should be in The Farm. Read more »

About a year ago I was in the United Tower in Kuwait City for the first time attending the opening of Upper Crust Pizzeria when I saw a sign for “Cafe November”. November can mean one thing and one thing only, that the distinguished November Bakery is opening up a cafe! If you love and admire the November Bakery as much as I do, you’d know how happy I was when I knew just before Ramadan that they were finally open. Read more »

Good Bye Alphonso Mangoes :(

By | June 26, 2013

gbmdm-011-1

The time has come to bid my favourite fruit ever, the Alphonso Mangoes, adieu. After an exceptionally long season where I’ve devoured every single golden mango that passed through my threshold, at last I can sit back and wave good bye for the imported cartons of mangoes. There are still a alphonso mangoes around but the taste has changed a bit, you know it’s time to let go. I’m also not interested in any other kind of mango, for once you taste the Alphonsos then that’s that. Read more »

The Making of Ramadan’s Samboosa

By | June 25, 2013

sbmk-003It’s time again to bring out the samboosa dough, for my Ramadan iftar table is never complete without a plate of hot bubbling baked samboosa (samoosa) in the very centre! With fourteen days to go until the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan where muslims fast all day long and break their fast at sunset. A favourite Ramadan preparation activity of mine is wrapping the Samboosa’s myself at home using my own filling mixes. Read more »

A few weeks back I saw a picture of a very delicious looking chocolate cake on instagram, it was the The Chocolate aux Noisettes, or the Chocolate Hazelnut cake by The Blue Bakery whose dessert pictures are heart-wrenching to say the least. Ever since I saw the cake’s picture, I couldn’t get it out of my head and whenever I saw another picture of that succulent looking cake I would start tasting and smelling chocolate hazelnut instantly. Dinner at the Gathering Bistro

By | May 1, 2013

cdatg-001-1

Back in November, which now feels just like yesterday, I’ve been granted a sneak preview of the Gathering Bistro before it was officially open (post). Fast forward six months later and we finally had the chance to try it out for dinner and we had an excellent time! The weather was windy and cool, the tables filled out quickly, a nice soundtrack playing subtly in the background and at one point Dido’s white flag was -yes, I’m a fan- and most importantly, the food was really good! First we had to try the Cheesy potato bombs, they seemed smaller that what we remember but they were as tasty and excellent as a comfort food dish can be. Read more »

On Wednesday I arrived home and found a packet of strawberries in the fridge. The label on the box said “Kuwaiti Strawberries”. As I washed and placed them in a bowl, I could see they were excellent, ruby red, very ripe, and extremely juicy strawberries. Their delicious scent was so strong, I could almost cut it with a knife as I cut off the strawberry stems. Read more »

By | April 16, 2013

Last week I was shopping in the Prestige district of the Avenues mall when I passed by the newly opened Fauchon café. It was buzzing with diners and suddenly I was hit by the strongest craving for their cheese club sandwich, which is excellent by the way. It was night time and Prestige district is always too dark for my liking so I decided to come by the next day to have my club sandwich for lunch and I’m glad I did. Read more »

I was going through an old box of mine trying to de-clutter when I found this tiny menu from Pizza Italia! I sat back in my chair, opened the menu, the Pizza Italia TV jingle playing in my head -and is still is!-, and I remembered fondly the good old days when Pizza Italia was Read more »

In my never ending search for a Mexican restaurant with great tasting Mexican food, I stumbled one cold winter night into Cantina Laredo, a US-Chain Mexican restaurant sporting the slogan “Gourmet Mexican Food” with menu prices to match that slogan.
