Help: To Lasik or not to Lasik?

By | November 14, 2011

The other night I was exceptionally tired so I went to bed early. As I was warmly snuggling underneath my covers I remembered I still had my daily contact lenses on so I took them out and discarded them on the night stand reminding my self as I fell asleep to clean them up tomorrow morning.

In the morning the two lenses had shriveled into a hard plastic mess that stuck to the night stand and simply wouldn’t get off easily. For a moment there I imagined them getting all plasticy dry and sticking to my eye balls. The image wasn’t pretty.

The realization that I am putting something this harmful in my eyes saddened me. Yet I find no alternative. Me & glasses do not mix, looks wise and practicality wise. Plus I am too chicken to go get myself a lasik operation. I’ve seen my brother’s eyes after the operation and he was simply in agony. What if the operation goes wrong and I go blind? It happens! What if I do the surgery, ruin perfectly fine eye tissue -that’s how it works by the way- and in a year or two my eye sigh deteriorates again, as it happened to one of my friends?

Do you think its worth it to go through with the Lasik surgery? If you’ve done it or know someone who has please share your experience.

I did it almost 5 years ago and I do not regret it at all. It was the best decision I ever took. All through out college I was suffering with contacts and dry eyes and it was so annoying and frustrating! Esp when I get an eye infection and I have to wear my glasses.
The surgery was scary, the whole thought of a man prodding at your eyes scared me, but there was no turning back it was either that or endure a life time of contact lenses.
My cornea was too thin so the doctor did not do the normal surgery, my aftermath was more painful than that of my friends and my mother, but it was worth every painful minute (Which i do not remember now).
I would recommend going to Amal Al-Duraini (he was in Boushehri Clinic), he did my eyes, my mothers eyes, 3 of my friends, my friends mother and her brothers eyes. Hes a bit of a mean person, but hes great with the eyes.

Dr. Amal is said to be the best in Kuwait. Unfortunately he has like a year’s waiting list or something…
How long did it take you to recover? Did ur eye sight go back to being bad again?

Because my procedure was different it took me a little bit longer to recover, the pain went away in 2-3 days (he gave me eye drops to numb the pain) and i slept through that time, but for about 10 days i felt like I was under water, but then it started to get better. ALthough in the first month night driving scared me bs it was fine.
The rest of my friends did normal lazik, they were fine the next day, no pain or anything. It was only because I had an issue with my corneas.
If you are going to do it, wait for Amal, don’t risk doing it any where else in my humble opinion.

I’m going through the same thing but, instead of contact lenses i wear glasses, which i despise greatly. So I was thinking to get lasik. What encouraged me is that, my friend did it, and her sight turned perfectly normal withing the next day. She never wore glasses or contact lenses since then, she didn’t complain of much pain or what so ever, there was eye sore for few days which was taken care of by eye drops provided by the doctor who performed the lasik. I really wish to be able to see normally without glasses, when I’m out, I don’t mostly wear glasses and its very disheartening not being able to see far off sights or people’s faces from far clearly.

After reading your post i concluded that maybe it all depends on the doctor you go to? you should know alot about the doctor and about his past surgeries and rate of his successful operations. My friend did it in Dubai with a very great doctor and she have perfect eye sight right now.

If you proceeded your plan with having lasik or did any further research into it, which made you realize whether its good or bad, please do post about your decision, it would be helpful to know others experiences.

Wow? Nothing but an eye sore afterwards? My brother had been sitting in a dark room when I found him with blood shot eyes and he stayed like that for a while!
Why don’t you get contacts? They are a much better option than glasses for sure!

Be careful someone I know did it here and there was a short improvement then it reverted, I recommend doing it outside Kuwait.

Im thinking of doing it too. I have very blurry vision without my glasses.

I was not a suitable candiate for Lasik for instead i went with a procedure called ICL. Its a more invasive procedure, but the main thing about it is that its a reversible procedure. It does not eat away at your cornea like lasik does. ICL is basically a special lens implanted into your eyes. no infections, no nothing. I’m so happy with them.
There is a doctor in Shaab, Dr. Khalid AlSabti, and he is an international pioneer in ICL.
No harm in going for a consultation.

Hi, it’s me, your silent reader that commented on your lady Di hair colour post! I felt like I needed to comment on this one as well. I struggled all throughout primary, secondary school and uni with constant dryness with contacts and non-willingness to accept glasses to finally give in to LASIK 4 years ago – hands down, best call I’ve ever made. I went to dr Jamal Al Kandari in Shaab.. No post-op pain, no dark sunglasses. Nothing! I went home, slept it off, woke up pain-free with perfect vision! So I honestly completely recommend both doc and decision!

Nope, absolutely perfect. I had terrible vision and stigmatism prior to Lasik, but il7imdellah it’s been 4 years and I can’t complain! I must say, the best feeling in the world was to be able to open my eyes and see actual COLOUR rather than just blurs of colour!

Reply

danderma on November 15, 2011 at 15:16.

Does Lasik cure stigmatism too?
Hmmm… when I open my eyes I have to stumble around in a blur until I get my hands on my glasses or my contacts! It must feel good to wake up and actually see fine!

Go for it !!
i did my intra lasik in beirut 3 years ago,, it was the best decision i made :)
but u have to remove the lenses 2 to 3 weeks before doing the eye test & the lasik,,
u will feel discomfort only for the first day !!
i did it with Dr. Nada Jabour in Clemenceau hospital,,, http://www.cmc.com.lb/
She is amazing and she was working in the states for more than 15 years i think. “not sure”, and the intra lasik was the latest technique when i did it.
if u have any question do not hesitate to contact me.

Didn’t you suffer afterwards?

Reply

My mom did it about 4yrs ago, and she’s perfectly fine! However, she did do it here in Canada. We have heard a lot of people going through in Kuwait :/ so my uncle also came to Canada and got it done. And that was about a yr ago. I think it all depends on where you do it and who does it for you.
Your righ! Eyes are kind of a big deal lol

I don’t believe in Kuwaiti medical services and that’s why if I decide to go with it I would do it abroad! I don’t blame ur mom and uncle at all!

Dr. Amal is supposed to be great.. bas he’s old. Fee wayid doctors that are younger, fresher, etc. and a lot of them are supposed to be great.
Don’t fall into the myth that if you do it abroad it’s safer or more guaranteed. We have a lot of qualified professionals… just do your research. I read in a comment someone did it with Al-Sabti – he was highly recommended to me too.

We know a professor in Optholmology in Kuwait. Believe it or not she adviced me not to do it!

I am an eyeglasses fan.. I wear them when I don’t need to.. I think they are funky! I can’t stand contact lenses..

My cousin had a big allergy problem after the lasik so ask well if you decide to do it..

Hey danderma ,
It has been a year since this post i am curious to know if you were you able to do your lasik ? I am in the same delimma today. I don’t have options of travelling so i wanna to do it in kuwait, so i am doing my research still. Have you become more confident in the past year or have been discouraged. …..?

Reply

danderma on January 22, 2013 at 09:39.

Quite frankly I think I’ve changed my mind about the LASIK all together. I’m just too much of a whimp and life is already complicated right now without going and having surgery. I can barely take care of myself as it is so I will be waiting a few more years until I do so. Who knows maybe in 5 years something new and revolutionary will come up to fix up the eye sight no?
