What i love about the arrival of winter time in Q8 is the drive to the free trade zone… i would buy myself a yummy drink, go to where the flamingoes are, roll down the window and stare at them, listen to them chirp or tweet or whatever sound they make… I always fail to take a decent photograph of them and i see many who come and try… the ones above are this year’s photos…

I wonder if they have been doing that forever or it’s a new thing? Before 2007 i found no record of “Flamingoes in Kuwait”… and why only Shuwaikh? What’s so special -aside from the pollution and the nasty odours-… why?

    Good Morning Danderma :

A very pleasing topic and nice shots . You could say Flamingos are one of the few tourist attractions we have in Kuwait .the number seems small ,maybe it is the start of their arrival here in Kuwait .
Sometimes i see people taking photos of them birds , with huge zoom lenses .
What is the camera you used for your shots

Good morning… so it is a new thing right? They weren’t here before 2007 ?

My camera is Canon Eos 500D without any zoom lenses…

We just had a lecture in our Natural History Society about birds and it seems that they are creatures of habit and like to come to the same place year after year. If they are only coming now it could be because one of their other habitats is destroyed. Another possibility is that they used to come long ago but after the pollution of the Gulf War the water wasn’t suitable to support their food so they stopped coming for a while. Where we live on the coast in California the Canadian geese are supposed to be visiting. A few years back they thought they were tired of all that flying and now they stick around the whole year! So some species which are supposed to migrate can get a little lazy it seems.

Hmmm makes sense! The area they stay in (free trade zone) was filled to the brim with sunken ships from the iraqi invasion and it looked horrible and only very recently was it cleared out and cleaned out from the debris… which explains why they came back to that area in particular…

and again i think they had gotten lazy! They are here to stay y7leelhom even when the winter is finished!!! They are quite a lovely sight though!
