What is this blog missing?

By | March 13, 2011

Although i have been blogging since August 2008, sometimes you find yourself in a place where you need to change directions, check out what the readers are interested , recalculate your steps and assess whether or not you are good enough to be called a blogger.

I’m not the best blogger in Kuwait, not even close. Not even a half decent blogger. Many of the top blogs out there are waaaay younger than mine. Mafeha shay, they know how to blog better than me hence why they are at the top, being recognized and praised and they they totally deserve it for they know how to interest the readers of Kuwait and capture their attention.

Now help me out here dear readers, what do you think my blog is missing? What do you like in other blogs that you cannot find in mine? Some of my readers said they would like to see more Arabic written posts and I am considering that.

What else? Be honest and tell me whatever is on your mind please, I’m welcome to all ideas 😀

Here are my two issues with your site:

    1) Kill the “Read the rest of this entry” habbit you have with some of your posts. Long posts are fine, no need to hide it, most people to lazy to click read more.

    2) Change your template. Your posts don’t stick out, I find the side bar dominates the page plus it’s always easier to read black text on white background. Your current template also looks like a stock blogspot site

I don’t have a problem with your psots, you have interesting stuff I just really have an issue with the way your content looks. Doesn’t make it very appealing and your blog currently lacks a strong identity.

    • danderma says:

Mark: Thank you! I truly mean it! Coming from you this means a lot to me.
I am changing the template entirely… i am just waiting for the designer to put the final touches here and there…
the first few days with this template i was happy but now i cannot stay too long on the blog the colour combos irritate me and the categories are residing in the middle like a column built in the middle of a ball room!!!

as for the identity i agree… too much is going on at the moment… i guess i should let some things go and concentrate more on other things!

In my opinion, the reason why I was attracted to your blog in the first place is your style of writing. People have their own weaknesses and their own advantages, and not everyone likes the same thing, so I don’t think you’re missing anything. 😀 I think your blog is perfect as it is. And thanks to your blog, now I know a lot about Kuwait (and places in Dubai lol) even though I have never stepped a foot there. 😀

    • danderma says:

Huda: Awww hon thank you :*
You are right too… it seems that one of my strongest points is the way i write… which means maybe i should concentrate more in that area…

  3. Yours Truly says:

To be honest with you, here is what I think:
It surprises me when a blogger asks a reader of what interests them. I mean of course it would help stir up some thoughts and ideas on what to blog about. But a blog initially comes from writing about what the blogger is interested in, not the other way around. It has always been a delimma for me seeing my visitor stats not up to standard and my blog is not as popular as I expected it to be. But again by being selective in my posts, I should expect that.

Let’s be honest here dear, most famous blogs in Kuwait you see 80 – 90% of their posts are actually news. You want more visitors? Copy news from all over Kuwait and the world and paste them in your blog. Your reader stats will jump 1000%. But is that what you really want your blog to be known for?
I see your blog is unique in the following topics:
    – Nostalgia: You always succeed in stirring up memories from our childhood.
    – Food: You have a fine taste in food. What makes it unique is that you are a vegetarian. When ever I hear the word vegetarian, you jump in my head 
    – UK: You are a tour guide for the lovely country.
    – Dathra: I’m sure Dathra has her own huge fan base, including me 😉

The above is what your blog is unique for. Focus on it more. For example:
    – Make an extra effort to post Dathra more frequently. I’m sure your readers will love it.
    – Dedicate a section for vegetarian cuisine. Maybe a recipe every week.
    – You seem to be interested in tourism in general. You can dedicate a weekly spot for this category.

Now to freshen up your blog, think of other things that you are interested in, then include them in your blog. Of course the readers are welcome to throw in their likes. But if you don’t like what they are suggesting, do not feel reluctant to include it. Writing about it will be like a chore.

When a blogger is passionate about what he/she writes, the blog will be successful. No matter what it is. And I consider you a passionate blogger 😉

Ok, this looks like a post on its own and not a comment! :/ forgive me dear

Yours Truly: ah hon fahamtene ‘3ala6
It’s not like i am asking ya jma3at shet7ebon tegroon khal akteb lokom…
It’s more like… what do you think blog X a7san min my blog feeh… hal wallah better design, ashra7? more interesting topics? newer info? better pictures etc. etc.

there is no way on earth that i would be able to write something i am not interested in. But sometimes ham you forget an entire aspect of life and then you see someone blogging about it and you remember “well chinna ana 3ndi chithee or chinna ana kint a7eb chithee bs min zman 3annah” 3araftay… or maybe you decide to take up something new ana b3d kil yoom 3ndi a new mashro3 :p

O sheftay shino your ideas? This is something i need… someone to highlight my strengths and weaknesses… thank you for those!!! You helped me TONS!
o you know i love long comments! It means the commenter actually cares! Betik o ma6ra7ik b3d ma ybelich 3zema!!!

  4. ilwawy says:

i like your blog the way it is. it is simple and comes from the heart.

what i do not like about other blogs is that they are commercialized. they may have started to write a blog because they liked to write, but what i feel is driving them on is the fact people actually want to read their blogs- i.e. they like the attention.

not that there is anything wrong with that per se.

another thing i do not like about most blogs, is how they advertise other products. most blogs out there. i guess they like the free stuff :)

and there are the bloggers that write excessive food reviews. i do not mind 1 or 2 reviews, but there are some of them that over do it- i.e. the best birger in q8 review, where the guy ate over 30 different types of burgers to decide what is the best one. frankly, that is disgusting!

il zibda, no need to change it/ i personally like it.

    • danderma says:

ilwawy: thank you for thinking my blog doesn’t need to change… i just need to rearrange my papers and to reorganize it a bit… that’ all…

And you see you think the best burger review of Q8 is disgusting… but i really loved it! I still wait for a new burger to come out for review even though i am a vegetarian! Momkin you like my blog bs others think i am blah or baykha or un interesting. There is no way to please every one of course but there is a certain blogging formula or equation that if you can balance correctly you can make the most out of your blogging experience o reach for the maximum number of readers you can achieve :)

one technical thingy, I would like to be able to move from one entry to the other without having to go back and then enter the next post. u had that system in ur old blog.

alotta blogs do the picture and a short text scheme which is fun to go thru and get a catch from everything, bs ur blog is qer and thats why its appealing to me, it has alot of personality.

gabil maybe kentay takteben sowalif and ur point of view, more of having ur own voice rather than being a 5rof in a qa6e3 that is 😉

    • danderma says:

Noora: Thank you! Believe it or not i liked that technical detail as well… it was useful for me when i commented or went between posts… i will make sure it is included in the new template 😀

ana lel asaf khafaft min il personal sowalif cause el people began to know who is behind the scenes… fa dar2an lel mashakel wal ma9ayeb i choose to steer away unless something really rant worthy comes up 😉

  7. Q80 In Denver says:

I think many of us share the same thinking .. How can we move our blogs forward. What’s worth staying and what’s not .. I for one can see that my blog is getting a bit down on the visitor stats and I think one of the reasons is the lack of advertising and I’m seriously working on it 😛 here is what I think you can do:

1- I totally agree that the template should be something simple, easy to read from and very much inviting. I’ll pass on the details since you’re already working on the new one.

2- easier navigation for the posts.

3- I feel that your blog feels personal and its reflected very much on your posts. Finding a new crowd means you have to let go some of that personal touch :/ its up to you to decide!

    Oo salamtech 😛

    • danderma says:

Q80inDenver: hmmm maybe your right… the more personal you are and less generic the more exclusive you seem to be…
as for your blog i think it’s great… but the one thing you need to do is post more and on a more regular basis…

  8. Enigma says:

I cannot say it better than Yours Truly.

You want hits, turn your blogs into a news site and churn 15-20 posts a day. You’ll get advertisers and are expected to maintain a quota. Soon enough, you’ll get sick of it (SomeContrast, anyone?)

Leave it the way it is. It’s different, and has a personal touch. Most blogs I can’t even tell apart by reading the content.

    • danderma says:

      Enignma: 7safa 3la SomeContrast wallah :(
I see your point clearly… true akthar min mara i go to a blog o read it 3bali someone o faj2a akteshef inah someone else… i can’t even memorize their names any more!!!

  9. I love everything about ur blog so can’t help u sorry ;p

  10. il wawy says:

    okay..6ub heres some genuine advice..

the main reason i read blogs is to feel closer to kuwait.. i.e. i have been away for +5 yrs.. fa one way to feel closer to home is to read up on events taking place in kuwait.. from festivals to simple advertisements around the streets.

bloggers that write constant updates of ‘happenings’ in kuwait interest me.

    • danderma says:

il wawy: you know when you told me inik away o some others ham told me inhom away a while back i began to think about what you said… wayed ashya2 we overlook in Q8 3la bo inah kil min y3arefha… lakin fee nass ma jarebaw il ‘3orba o ana wa7da minhom… fa ma nadry shino ele barra 7aseen feeh o shloon metshawgen 3la akhbar elq8 o shofat il q8 o ahalha… therefore you have just confirmed my thoughts… thank you very much for that :)

  11. Sara D. says:

i think each blog is unique and u can tell a bit about the blogger, i like the way u write…ur posts are fun to read 😉 so keep it up!

  12. Thank you! I totally agree on that .. I’m going to resolve as soon as possible inshallah! :)

Clear your head .. Stay focused .. and you will get it right! I know you will! 😉

Wishing you the best of luck! 😀

  13. il wawy says:

    7ayach allah.. any time :)

  14. giggles says:

i like your blog the way it is, some of the comments say that you have to do that and focus on that. but i don’t see that bil 3aks i like it simple, the simpler the better. wish you all the best if luck :)

    • danderma says:

Giggles: Thank you hon… so you think i don’t have to change a thing ha 😀

  15. cookie monster says:

i love your blog just the way it is honestly…my only issue is what mark highlighted above. other than that, i think you take great shots, cover a variety of topics and are exclusive ie. i dont agree u should copy paste all the news that every other blog has out there. its not about quantity, its quality in both readers and topics which i believe you achieve.
good luck and God bless …you’re doing a great job …coming from a silent reader :)

    • danderma says:

Cookie Monster: Thank you hon for coming out of your silence 😉 I really appreciate your comment and i see what you mean…

  16. Moody Pants says:

I only have 2 comments on the new design:

    1. whenever i want to write a new comment, i always have to fill my info again and i dont know why.

    2. theres no subscribe to the post or comments to recieve notifications.

    • danderma says:

Moody: is that so? I never noticed that before because i comment from within wordpress panel… and as for the subscribe it’s coming back again soon in the new design insha2 Allah 😀

  17. Aws says:

I come here when i miss u… and it is a bless to know that you’re always here… always near.. no matter how far away or long ago we part.. you’d still be there, with your very insgihtful observations, witty remarks and charming writing appeal..

i rarely log into any other blog.. Here i feel like home.. because i know the person behind the blog and i trust her.. thank you for creating this platform for our diwaneya..

the thing is, just be yourself, write what ever you feel like writing.. you will only be passionate about the stuff you feel strongly about..

as for the looks of the website.. i did like your first sakura theme.. just because u like sakura.. i.e. it was “YOU”.

and the more you have about you.. the better i could associate it with you..

One remark i want to add .. you’ve been quite successful with the pictures part… very indicative and shows you put quite some effort into it : )

keep up the good work !

    • danderma says:

AWS: aww sweetheart your comment is truly from the heart… bs el dewaniya yabeelha more attendance tra!
Et9adgeen i understand what you mean… that Sakura theme was my favourite theme EVER because it meant something to me… thank you so much my lovely AWS… you are the best :*

  18. Kuweight 64 says:

I really can’t figure what you should change about your blog. I visit your blog twice a day and love the contents and all that you post. I don’t think you should ‘let any topics go’, for each is so interesting. Perhaps like Mark mentioned, a design modication may make a difference. A lot of male bloggers include technology and world news in their blogs which probably gets more readership. But you don’t have to do much of that really because its already there in the papers in print and online editions as well. Keep up the beautiful work and do continue to blog in English. Love your blog!

    • danderma says:

Kuweight: thank you for your kind words… insha2 Allah when my new design is launched it might make things easier to read and handle 😀
