Last week, I attended my very first baby shower ever!
Ee wallah, I swear, first ever!
I grew up in Kuwait during the time when new mothers held their receptions at home, I don’t know about you but in my time a new baby meant the new mother stayed at her parents place in ground floor room and people arrived bearing gifts day in and day out for forty days straight, the Nifas period as its called in the Middle East. Then by the time my peers started becoming mummies, the baby reception was for a day or two at most in a private hospital or after the Nifas period in a baby-less celebration where the lady is all dressed up as a yummy-mummy and in either case, women arrive bearing gifts. How incredibly cute are those little green olive-like berries?
They don’t look like much now, do they? I myself wouldn’t have given them a second glance, they don’t strike me as that interesting or boring but this is one very fact-affirming moment in life where the inside is what indeed that matter and not the visible cover. Once you cut those little berries in half you will find a little teeny kiwi inside! Yes, kiwi, complete with miniature little black seeds and all! Don’t believe me? Look! This is the grape sized olive-like little green berry… Read more »
In the very last days of January I had the chance to get a sneak peek inside the location of a new bakery in Kuwait City that was due to open very soon. The name is Days Boutique, an artisan desserts bakery located in Dar Al-Awadhi right next door to the famous Karak Gholam. The decor of the coming-soon Days Boutique is quite lovely, modern with a huge studded revolving door, patterned tiles, and endless gorgeous light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Read more »
The other day I was invited for a tasting dinner in Nutri, one of Kuwait City’s newest restaurants located in Dar Al-Awadhi and specialising in providing light and healthy meals in a restaurant setting. Don’t you wish there were more health-oriented restaurants around in the land of 1001 restaurants? Please let it be the next trend, we are so tired of burger joints! Read more »
When I first set foot on the Grand Avenues during the Avenues construction site visit, I could almost imagine a European like walkway lined with cafes and international shops. Then when the Avenues did finally open and became the place to be in Kuwait, it did feel like you were travelling every time you walk down it’s vast corridors. Last week, Read more »
Elba’s traditional Kuwaiti bakery brought back their famous Elba with the start of the holy month of Ramadan. I’ve missed their elba, but they only make it in Ramadan and so on the very first week they sent me one cold pot of saffron-y elba, Dallah’s way of a Ramadan greeting. Read more »
With one week to go until the start of the holy month of Ramadan people are starting to distribute Ramadan gifts to their loved ones. If you are still not sure what to give out as a gift or still searching, you may want to continue reading this post for the first early Ramadan gift I’ve received was from Ayar Perfumes and is quite a fine one indeed. Back again at one of my current favourite restaurants in Kuwait, but this time I’m trying it for breakfast for I’ve seen pictures and the pictures beckoned me over to the Grand Avenues and up the Elevator of Harvey Nichols. When I went it was a weekend morning, and I was there at 9 A.M. expecting to see an empty restaurant -and an empty Avenues- but to my surprise the Avenues was bustling with activity and Véranda had Read more »
Ever since Véranda’s opening in March 2013 I’ve been there several times for different occasions and each and every time I’ve had a lip-smacking meal and an excellent time. The last time I was there was last Thursday with my friends. People were just out of work starting their weekend, the Avenues was filling up fast with people so we chose to go to Véranda: overlooking the weekend hubbub from the balcony but not bothered by the crowds. A year or so ago when I did the “What can you buy with a 5 fils coin” (post) I thought that the 5 fils were the only coins you couldn’t use on their own to purchase something in Kuwait and you had to at least have 10 fils to buy something. Then I went looking around for something to buy for 10 fils and here is a list of things you can buy with a 10 fils Read more »
I was invited to try the soon to be opened Véranda restaurant in Harvey Nichols yesterday.
