Bloggers: How Anonymous Do you Think you Are?

I know that people around the world are always intrigued by the question of who is behind that mask/website/book/blog etc. I know that Q8y people in particular are, how shall i put it politely, inquisitive. I know some people who are obsessed with knowing the real identity of bloggers/bloggerettes…

But when one of my friends told me that a family member of hers had told her about my blog and told her my real identity with my full name, i was beyond shocked!!!

My family & my closest friends know who i am of course but all of them are sworn to secresy and they wouldn’t tell. I have a select few of bloggerettes whome i have met and they know my real identity like i know theirs. But then blogerretes (and bloggers) all know the importance of anonymity and act with the rule of not exposing a fellow blogger’s identity for the public, it goes without saying of course.

So i am curious… how on earth did people find out? As in it’s public knowledge that flana is Danderma?! Not that i care of course it’s not like i am doing something wrong and i would happily shake hands with any one who asks but then there is  certain level of mystery and vagueness that i would like to keep especially when a rant is brewing!!!

Now a show of hands… how many of you know my real identity and bloggers, how anonymous do you think you are?!

Tip: To keep your identity secret, do not comment on blogs with an email that you use for your real name profile in Facebook 😉

my blog is connected to my facebook and twitter , so im sure that im no anonymous 😛 LOL

  2. I know who you are 😉 Never met you in person though :)
What’s funny is I’m not annonymous and I post a lot about my kids and pictures of them… when my kids are out with my sisters, people approach them thinking its me ;p “Dalal I follow your blog and I love it!” “I’m not Dalal. I’m her sister” then my sister would call…”Fetha7teena!” Lol!!!
Kuwait is small and we have a smaller community… and everyone is bound to know the other ;p

    • danderma says:

      LoooL you do? How 😀
You are not anonymous hon at ALL 😀 your sister’s reaction chinah my mom’s she would think fashla if anyone knew… bs s7 kalamich el q8 is very small o everyone eventually ends up knowing every one else!

      • Lol!!! Actually I thought you were some one I knew… same style of writing ;p but when I inquired (I felt inquistive, which I’m normally am not) and the people I asked said no …she is flana alfalni 😉
You asked me how I feel? Ok I ‘ll sound superficial… bas before I blogged I usually go to check on the store or out with my boys in my worn out jeans and an old shirt with a makeupless face…. Now when I go.. I go kash5a 3ala singat 3ashar ;ppp I have to mind my manners too :s

        • danderma says:

Zain ashwa ako another one who has the same style of writing!
Bs see…. people know who i am already just by asking! Ya salam :)

LoooL lazim kashkha 3la singat 3ashara? I still like my crocks o worn out jeans look… lazim nekshakh then!?

  3. enigma says:

a lot of people knew who i was (back when I used to blog), but I wasn’t exactly trying to keep it a secret.

And as long as people know- who you are, believe me it is very easy to know your full name.. I don’t remember it, bas mar 3alay loool :p

    • danderma says:

LoooooooooooooooooooooL ok another one who knows me :p
It’s not like i was trying to keep it a secret… but then how did people know is beyond me!!!

  4. chirp says:

    I don’t know who u are.

But I know a lot of ppl know who I am, not that hard cuz I didn’t stray far from my nickname, and I don’t care about being anonymous.. Most ppl who read my blog and know me figured it out 3ala 6ool.

    • danderma says:

I knew who you are min hathak il post on ur blog rememebr it 😉 Bs u still don’t know who i am ? El thaher lazim asawee introduction party for my favorite bloggers! Shaklee bayeeb MUNCH BBQ b3d :)

      • Chirp says:

Yabeela introduction party! I know some of the old bloggers and bloggerettes that have stopped blogging now.
Do we have mutual friends? Madry layl7een I have no idea who u are :p

        • danderma says:

LooL i will have to ask the ones i know if they know you… many of the ones i know have stopped blogging now as well :(

          • enigma says:

yeah we kinda stopped when it all became food, apple, and cupcake reviews hoping for sponsors

            ://

          • danderma says:

I miss the old days of blogging when you read real heartful stories from people…
But then ham elwa7ed ma ykhalonah yakteb 3la ra7tah in peace… lazim they find out who he is o spread his identity around… the options are very limited afterwards :(

  5. ShoSho says:

    Interesting post..

For me, I always thought I’m not anonymous, even before I created my facebook account.. maybe because I am personal in my blog, and coz I use my real name and my kids name. I think it’s really easy to know who I am, if the people who know me in life read my blog.

I never ask anyone who is that blogger is .. Only one time I found out that a blogger is a relative of mine, through reading her blog but to this day, I didn’t tell anyone who she is. It’s her buisness.. so what if we know who this person is? ya3ni shino we are all humans, we all rant, we all have good days and bad days, so I don’t care if people know me. It’s who I am.

I know some people are careful about being anonymous.. and that I respect. I don’t even care about family names and stuff tara when I meet people I don’t even ask about their family names or who is related to who. People ask me marrat hathi bint mino I am like I don’t know :S Some people find it odd that I don’t ask “those kinds” of questions.

As far, as I am concerned, I don’t know your real identity lol I just knew that relative, and the few bloggers I added on facebook :S

    o salamtich :)

    • danderma says:

I never dig around and ask mino flan o mino 3lantan… o i usually keep quiet if i know someone is a blogger… because lo inhom yboon they say their real identities chan galooha… half of the bloggerettes i know i know them by first name only tra :)

Bs y3ni if you know who someone is so what? other than adding a layer of judgementalism to your view it won’t fulfill anything!

  6. Om Lujain says:

lol… I have no idea who you are :) so don’t worry.. you can rant away as much as you like..
as for me.. some people know who I am, as I have met them in person, but I guess at the end, as you said, I don’t really care who knows who I am… as I don’t think I am doing anything wrong… and if anyone ever wants.. they can come join me for some coffee or tea :)

    • danderma says:

Zain zain ashwa more people who don’t know me 😀
LooL i agree.. it’s not like i am leading a 2nd life or anything… but people can be so judgemental sometimes so anonymity will spare you that attitude…

  7. swera says:

LOL it happened to me when of the other bloggers identified me just from one post! it turned out that her mom knew my late mom! taraaaaaa! i also dont care about my identity being exposed! we’re not walking naked in the streets y3ni! bs I don’t think I’m that anonymous and no i dont know ur real identity 😛

    • danderma says:

LoooL zain ashwa you don’t know my real identity yet… i am still semi anonymous!

I remember once someone figured out who you are from some pictures of your later mother’s items right?

  8. Sara says:

I do agree that once your identity is revealed to your readers, you find yourself constantly editing yourself and your posts to sound neutral so that your cousin, sister inlaw and frenemy all can read your blog and not formulate an opinion towards you. I, on the other hand, decided people will find out anyway so why make them search for the person behind the blog lol
I have noticed though that many bloggers have revealed their identities, either through tv programs, or even social events etc so it is not a social faux pas anymore, take it as a compliment that people are actually interested in knowing who the person behind this blog is!
You do write in an engaging way, your sense of humor and character is evident in your posts…so people are intrigued :)

    • danderma says:

it’s not a social faux pas to reveal your identity i agree… but i believe that people should be allowed a choice :)
LooL thank you for your kind words hon… i believe you are the intriguing one, i love your posts!!!

  9. noora says:

I only know one bloggerette’s identity and its not u ;p thu I would be honored if I knew u on a personal level :) u know u r one of my favz!

maybe they found out min pictures! or sowalif like going out celebrating ur little czns birthday! one can figure out.

anonymity is crucial if Im to have my own blog. Followers should always respect that.

    • danderma says:

LoooL thank you for liking my blog so much :*

I think anonymity is on some level important because if you are reading for an anonymous person you will have your mind free to judge on the subject it self rather than judge on the writer writing the subject…

  10. Zaina says:

    I know YOU 😛 lol

your way of writing and expressing yourself is veryyyyyy unique. so, one day on facebook, there was this girl, we had a few friends in common, and she kept coming up on my newsfeed, “flana also commented on your friends status” I noticed that what she wrote is familiar, the way she wrote it… certain words… ooo the pic she had on her profile was OBVIOUS…. it’s related to your name here :p anyway, i had a feeling that it was you 😛 and after seeing more comments or etc, it turned out that it wassssssss :p so i guess thats how ppl find out?

    • danderma says:

LoooooooL ok you and a friend of mine found me by saying the same thing… the way i write is unique!
How is that? how can you tell the way i write is unique? I find my writings similar to every one elses y3ni what a i saying ballah ilee made me stand out :S

Must monitor my comments then :p Setray 3la ma wayahtay :p

  11. om modhi says:

you’re still danderma to me 😛 .. ma3aref wala shay 3anich bas asoolef 3anich chiney a3arfech min sneen 7ata rayli gam esoolef 3anich lool lama eb neshterey shy .. wela lama enkoon in london lazim na6ri ur nick ..

    ya 7ath’hom ele e3arfoonich etyaneeen :** .. bas sa7 lo ana 3endey blog mara7 agool 7ag wala a7ad 3ana even my husband mo 3ashan basawi shay ghala6 bas arya7 o ana min el noo3 ele ma atqabal enteqadat min ay a7ad :)

    • danderma says:

I don’t mind people knowing who am i but it feels different you know… china 3ndi bigger responsibility now like speaking in public rather than behind a curtain!

  12. I understand that some people, especially girls, need anonymousity..
I don’t know you, I only know “Danderma”

As for myself, I’m not anonymous at all lol..
Is it a good thing? a bad thing?
Do I need it? and why?

    • danderma says:

      Min ygool inta Anonymous :p

I don’t think it’s good or bad… but then being unanonymous in the USA mathalan is different than being unanonymous in Q8… the moment people know who you are suddenly there is a filter to all your views and ideas and comments and posts… a filter made by their judgement of who you are rather than what is the content you are providing if you know what i mean :)

      • Hehe, well, I’d advice any girl to be anonymous.
Not that she’s doing anything wrong, but our society can be stupid at times. (Hi stalker!)

But regarding guys, I don’t mind saying whatever I say on my blog anywhere out there. If people are against it then that is their point of view. Just like I respected their’s, they should respect mine.

If they don’t? then they’re not worth my time. ;p

        What do you advice though?

        • danderma says:

Hmmm i guess it depends on what you really want out of your blog.
If you want to start a new life, or present a point of view where you cannot be judged for anything but your ideas, or you want a place to vent and rant about what’s happening in your life… then anonymity it is

But if you want to meet people and make friends or provide a community service or you simply don’t care then it doesn’t matter if you are anonymous or not…

  13. Yours Truly says:

I don’t know who you are! bas shakly will find out very soon 😛

As for me I don’t advertise who I am but some people know that this is my blog fa I guess they talk. It’s kind of my fault as I did not keep my identity 100% anonymous fa I can’t blame anyone if someone I don’t know knows who I am.

I think it’s difficult for some bloggers to stay completely anonymous, as in no single person knows who they are. Sometimes you want to take the opinions of friends or family in what you write or you want them to give you ideas fa you have to tell them about your blog. This is why some people know me :) Other than that I don’t tell my identity.

    • danderma says:

LoooL same here very very soon 😉

I understand when you tell your closest friends and family that you are a blogger… but to find out that strange people who have absolutely no connection to you hear from other people that you are flana il flaniya… i mean whats up with that?

Then again no one can be 100% anonymous and people are bound to slip!

  14. Farah says:

I only started blogging recently and this was something to consider long before I created the blog. Since I mostly don’t know a lot of people here and I’m generally a silent reader of Kuwaiti blogs, I thought well no one will ever find it and if it’s family and friends who are going to read it (due to Facebook auto-posting) I might as well just say who I am.

It hasn’t stopped me from saying whatever I want (and i’m very opinionated 😛 hahaha) because that’s what it is about. At the end people have a choice to skip if they don’t like what they are seeing/reading :) You have to be thick skinned whether you are anonymous or not because there will always be people who forget we’re human and will pass judgement. As long as you are comfortable with your choice that’s what really matters :)

    • danderma says:

i don’t really care if people know my real identity or not… but i am surprised that people actually go out of their way just to uncover whose who and are actually succeeding!

So now you know who blogger X is… what’s next? How did that improve your life exactly?!

      • Farah says:

hehehe so true it takes dedication to find out and sometimes it happens by coincidence. Some people just like to link a face to the person behind the writing (and hope to bond outside of cyberspace? ) and some just want more gossip material for the sub7iyat ( hate to generalize but it’s part of our culture)

        • danderma says:

Yeah i am guessing it’s more about the gossip less about the bonding outside of cyberspace 😉

  15. ansam518 says:

I am not at all :-S Ohhh and you will be shocked marra wa7da es6aratli FULL NAMES of many bloggers 3indina I was like “whoa”!!

  16. doona says:

thakarteny eb a post i wrote quite a while back
    http://ble5.blogspot.com/2009/03/anonymity.html

like i mentioned, when i first started blogging, anonymity was an obsession..bas now its like blaah who cares ;p oh and 9adgeny i know a HUGE amount of bloggers who think they’re anonymous but that i ended up knowing from tiny little details and coincidences ;p

mara 3araft bloggera from the way she uses her smilies ;p another mn ga3da m3 my friends oo tgol ee flana rfejty galatly salfa etc akon ana already garyat’ha eb blog

kuwait is a tiny tiny country oo everyone knows everyone…fa im not surprised lol :)

but it is a pleasure knowing you dandeee ;**

    • danderma says:

Pleasure knowing you too sweetheart *big bear hug* :*

wow… how come i never find out about people like that?

I once found out who a blogger was by commenting on a FB post of one of my friends and there she was commenting with her real name and blogger Profile Picture that is very unique!!!

  17. Sn3a says:

I simply do not care about the identity of bloggers or about them knowing who am i
because some of them chooseto be anynomous so who am i to annoy them and ask behind their back
but back in collage some girls knew who am i
    but again i don’t care
am just having fun reading ur blogs all and am honoured that you allow us to do so

    • danderma says:

I agree with you… if a blogger wants someone to find out who they are they would have plastered their full name somewhere in the blog… if they don’t what right do you have to go and search and try to find out? I understand that curiosity is part of human nature but ako limits y3ni especially since the identity of blogger X mathalan will not improve your life in any visible way!

  18. confashion says:

People can’t keep a secret around here.. and you’d be surprised the lengths they’d go to to find out the blogger’s identity :)

    • danderma says:

I am not surprised any more! You would be glad to know that you are one of the few bloggers whose identity is still strongly guarded 😉

  19. Deedz says:

Im not the detective kind of person.. bas for some reason… walla madri laish the identity of bloggerettes fall in my lap! oo im not even a blogger myself..I accidently found out my sis was a blogger too! (u can guess who from my email)

How I got to know you? thru facebook.. u commented on my friend’s profile once (o shes also a blogger i instantly knew her identitiy from her posts) oo ur profile pic at that time was the stuffed Duck toy u always carry around! that was SUCH a giveaway 😛

However 3ala kithir el blogerettes eli i know their identities.. i never approached them eni “tara a3rfkum o a3rf blogkum”, nor did i ever think of telling anyone about them.. cuz honestly who cares ?

    Cheers!

    • danderma says:

loool aham shay il identity of bloggerettes fall in ur lap!!! Shloon?

Hmmm i cannot make the connection between your email and who might ur sister the blogger be… not someone i know personally… maybe i know her by first name only!

Hal facebook fethee7a athary! ham wa7da waratnee on Twitter the way she figured my real identity min my facebook… it was a bit complicated thought but she did nail it!

Bs zani itsaween… i personally found out a lot of bloggers identities without them knowing, either from FB or by someone who told me or by gossip… just because i found out doesn’t give me the right to share the news with the world… if they wanted people to find out they would have announced it themselves…

  20. I dont know u ‘)

Im identity isnt anonymous, a lot of ppl know me. I dont mind. Since i stopped sharing very personal things here.

  21. um-mit3ib says:

    shakhbaaaaaaaaaaaaarrryyy anonymity;p ma7ad kan mafthooo7 kithre;p bs 7ata intay shway mafthoo7a;p i dont know u to be honest;p but i know ppl that do ;p min siwalfech ;p

  22. Kinz says:

I don’t know your true identity but I am very much enjoying reading Danderma’s opinions on life and I’m happy to be a reader on your blog. I wish I were a little more anonymous myself but when I post under Kinz in some forums my friends reply with my real name. Your secret is only as safe as your friends lol.

    • danderma says:

The thing is i know my friends and family are safe… it’s the question of how else did people find out 😉

  23. giggles says:

i don’t know who you are but i can tell that you are such a sweet person and fun to be with, the person that i refer back to her posts especially the food and london ones keep it up :)

  24. тσσηα says:

quit an interesting post. First of all dnt worry ur still anonymous to me ;p ! and second of all, I thought of keeping mine anonymous then I was like ok who cares and I connected it to my twitter not that i dont know how to be anonymous and use other email address and other twitter user name its just not that important to me anyway ! 😉

And I knew some blogger from her post, well not me actually my moms could figure our who she was bcoz she was the daughter or her friend and I was really pleased to meet her 😉 and I so love her ;*

    • danderma says:

Zain ashwa i am still anonymous to some extent 😀

loool so your mom figured the identity of the blogger out!!! Glad things turned out to your benefit then 😀
