A long long time ago there was a little booklet of recipes distributed by the Kuwait Flour mills company, or sharekat elma6a7in as we call it in Kuwait. That little Ramadan booklet had been so successful a second one that demanded, then it became a Ramadan tradition: waiting for the Ma6a7en cook book! This is the oldest book I could find which is book #2.

I remember clearly rifling through this book, over and over, as a teenager in the early 90’s. Check this dessert.

7lo el t7reer, I don’t think anyone is doing it anymore but it was quite popular after 1991 made from whatever ingredients that was available during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. I have also been mesmerized by this recipe for EVER! But somehow never made it. I always imagined my self eating it the same way Sally in the carton ate in in the hot buns episode <3

Check how much it cost back then!

Then came one edition after the other.

This collection is pretty old as well, I am guessing mid 90’s. This edition had a separate book translating the recipes into Philipino, Sirilankian, and Indian languages for the house cooks.

The ones I have next is the Diet & Diabetes edition, which is quite helpful I must say, its one of my favorites.

In Ramadan 2006 if I am not mistaken when this edition came out, there was a marshmallow crisis in Kuwait. You couldn’t find a single marshmallow bag anywhere for every one had bought it to try that cake recipe.

In Ramadan 2007 there was no book, just a thin booklet with different recipes for sandwiches and sliders which were the habba back then. I remember my late mother in law Allah yer7amha bought it for me as a gift.

Nothing was out until 2009 and 2010 respectively when the books name was changed to “Senses” and it got bigger and more posh.

I am still waiting and hoping that 2011 will bring out Senses 3 soon. Ramadan in Kuwait is not complete if not for a new cooking book from Alma6a7in :)

Sorry hon I don’t think we are allowed to make copies, with the copy rights and all… but they are all available in the Ma6a7in outlets. She3eb Yarmouk Khaldiya off the top of my head. Fai7a Co-Op libraries also stock them I’ve seen them the last time I was there…

    I LOVE THEM!!!!!

The first year senses came out my co worker and I were reading the newspaper and started to drool, so we called our coworker who was late into coming to work and forced him to stop at one of the ma6a7in stores on his way to work and got us all books. We spent the day looking and droooooling over the recipes.
Last year we called Mr. Delivery and made them go pick up copies for us at work.
This Ramadan I’m in a new job/company, and I’m gonna miss this little tradition with my coworker :(
Can’t wait for the new book either LOLz

I saw the ad for Senses 3 on the Kuwait Flour Mills truck few weeks back. I guess the book is out already.

    • danderma says:

Are you sure? I saw that ad but it turned out to be for senses 3 and not 2 :(

      • Mona says:

Yeah it was for Senses 3 so either it’s out or will be coming out soon enough. Not sure, will have to check the outlets or the co-ops.
