Back in August 2015, almost six months ago, a little black box from Grand Cinemas inscribed with “Try guessing what’s inside the box!” arrived on my doorstep. I was intrigued, and guessed it was an invitation to a movie premier or something. I wouldn’t usually and willingly go into a cinema to watch a movie about sea pirates, not even pirates of the Caribbean, but if it was a Tom Hanks then it’s a must see movie regardless of the story or the trailer. Last week I went to see the movie Prisoners which I’ve been looking forward to watching for a while since its starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. I received an invitation to attend the advanced screening of the movie “Rush” by Cinescape which took place yesterday and since I love everything movie related I was on my seat at 8:15 P.M. sharp waiting for the movie to start. Frankly, I didn’t know what the movie was about because I have a policy regarding not watching trailers anymore but I knew it was about car racing, based on a true story, its soundtrack is composed by Hans Zimmer, is starring Chris Hemsworth, and there is popcorn involved as well. When Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star in a movie, you expect it to be one worth watching and their latest movie, Malavita a.k.a. The Family, was one good movie I watched recently. The movie is about the family of an ex-mafia boss who ratted out on his friends therefore the FBI had to change his identity and hide him and his family all they way in Normandy, France where they should be able to live in peace, but their old violent habits happen to sneak back on them and eventually, their old mafia friends discover their whereabouts and come back for revenge. One of my all time favourite actors is Denzel Washington. I’ve never been to a movie of his that I didn’t like, perhaps only Safe House and I found myself liking it eventually and watching it again when I thought I wouldn’t. Therefore when the trailer for 2 Guns kept appearing on movie screens I didn’t care much for what seems to be another Mexican drug cartel movie, but thought I’d see what would Denzel bring to the drug cartel movie. I was looking at cinema listings for Jobs movies in both cinescape and grand cinema in Kuwait when I noticed a movie listing with an “exclusive” written next to it. I did a little research and realised that a movie that it was called Elysium that it starred Matt Damon and Jodi Foster, and that it resides 3rd on the US Movie Box Office list, and that it was indeed showing exclusively on grand cinema’s screens and not cinescape’s. One of two movies I really wanted to watch was The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. It was out in June, and I waited for it to arrive to the cinemas in Kuwait all summer long but that didn’t happen because it was banned along with The Internship. Luckily both comedy movies weren’t banned in Dubai and after watching both of them I see absolutely nothing that would cause them to be banned. My favourite X-Men, Wolverine, is finally back in The Wolverine movie. I’ve been waiting to watch it forever and it finally premiered on 15 August in Kuwait. Of all the movies I’ve been waiting for this year, The Wolverine might very well be my favourite. Read more »
I’ve seen the trailer for this movie a while back and I knew it was one movie I really wanted to watch. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are two salesmen who lose their jobs and they look everywhere but can only, and miraculously, secure an internship at the one and only Google. Having to compete against a herd of geeky genius seniors with zilch knowledge of how computers work, you know their internship would be one long interesting adventure. Read more »
Superman was my favourite childhood superhero. I grew up watching Superman movies, one movie in particular the Superman III we watched over and over and over again whenever we had a meal. My father was a big Superman fan and he bought us all the VHS tapes except for Superman III which he recorded off KTV2 on our VHS video. After Christopher Reeve, no one could fill in his Superman shoes, and after watching Man of Steel, I personally believe no one can. Read more »
I remember seeing the trailer of Now You See Me before watching one of the movies earlier this past May. When I saw what they were up to -in the trailer- I knew I wanted to watch it ASAP! One of the movies I’ve been looking for to watching in 2013 was the third and supposedly last instalment of the Hangover series. I’m glad I didn’t wait to see it in Kuwait’s cinema for it would have been chopped up beyond recognition and you are left trying to piece together what went on in the movie. For the past few weeks whenever the Top US Box Office segment comes on TV between programs and I watch the rating of The Call, I tell myself that this sounds like an excellent movie and I must watch it if it ever made it to Kuwait’s cinema. I’ve been waiting quite impatiently for Iron Man 3 to arrive on the movie theaters for he’s my favorite Marvel character plus I had this feeling that the third -and I believe the last- movie was one worth watching. Someone should name 2013 the year of sequels, for Hollywood seems to finally be making up for its past years of lame movies. The movies coming up next are less of children’s fairy tale re-writes and more sequels to popular movies. The can’t-wait-for-it-to-show-again movie parade seems to be starting with the month of May, given that the movies aren’t censored or banned by Kuwait’s MOI that is. Read more »
I went to see Oblivion last weekend for its been a while since something good arrived to the big screens. I didn’t think feel overly excited after watching the trailer, it looked like another post-apocalyptic movie where the survivors roam the earth fending off yet to be found dangers. The movie was released in Kuwait on the 21st of March, a day before it was released in the USA and as soon as I saw the actors and the trailers I knew I was in for a good movie so I couldn’t wait to see it. I saw it Thursday night and I have to say I enjoyed it very very much.

I’ve always complained from the armies of young children usually present in every movie I go to in Kuwait. Either teenagers who would yell, scream, or think they enriching the movie experience with their vulgar catcalls or the babies or toddlers who scream bloody murder or get bored and start whining.
