If you didn’t know already, I’m a big LOTR fan. I spend weekends watching the extended editions of the LOTR trilogy, back to back marathon style. When The Hobbit came out last year I thought it was brilliant and naturally I couldn’t wait for the second Hobbit movie to come out. I wouldn’t usually and willingly go into a cinema to watch a movie about sea pirates, not even pirates of the Caribbean, but if it was a Tom Hanks then it’s a must see movie regardless of the story or the trailer. I received an invitation to attend the advanced screening of the movie “Rush” by Cinescape which took place yesterday and since I love everything movie related I was on my seat at 8:15 P.M. sharp waiting for the movie to start. Frankly, I didn’t know what the movie was about because I have a policy regarding not watching trailers anymore but I knew it was about car racing, based on a true story, its soundtrack is composed by Hans Zimmer, is starring Chris Hemsworth, and there is popcorn involved as well. When Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star in a movie, you expect it to be one worth watching and their latest movie, Malavita a.k.a. The Family, was one good movie I watched recently. The movie is about the family of an ex-mafia boss who ratted out on his friends therefore the FBI had to change his identity and hide him and his family all they way in Normandy, France where they should be able to live in peace, but their old violent habits happen to sneak back on them and eventually, their old mafia friends discover their whereabouts and come back for revenge. One of my all time favourite actors is Denzel Washington. I’ve never been to a movie of his that I didn’t like, perhaps only Safe House and I found myself liking it eventually and watching it again when I thought I wouldn’t. Therefore when the trailer for 2 Guns kept appearing on movie screens I didn’t care much for what seems to be another Mexican drug cartel movie, but thought I’d see what would Denzel bring to the drug cartel movie. When I knew Jobs movie was in the cinema I wanted to go see it right away but I was put off by the unbelievable amount of bad reviews and feedbacks I got. Some said it was the movie was boring, others said the movie was all shot in a boardroom, others hated Ashton Kutcher as Jobs, other thought it was a complete waste of time, etc. I was reluctant to go to be frank, but then I’ve always had a mind of my own and different taste than everyone else so I’ve decided to go see it and decide for myself. I was looking at cinema listings for Jobs movies in both cinescape and grand cinema in Kuwait when I noticed a movie listing with an “exclusive” written next to it. I did a little research and realised that a movie that it was called Elysium that it starred Matt Damon and Jodi Foster, and that it resides 3rd on the US Movie Box Office list, and that it was indeed showing exclusively on grand cinema’s screens and not cinescape’s. One of two movies I really wanted to watch was The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. It was out in June, and I waited for it to arrive to the cinemas in Kuwait all summer long but that didn’t happen because it was banned along with The Internship. Luckily both comedy movies weren’t banned in Dubai and after watching both of them I see absolutely nothing that would cause them to be banned. I’ve seen the trailer for this movie a while back and I knew it was one movie I really wanted to watch. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are two salesmen who lose their jobs and they look everywhere but can only, and miraculously, secure an internship at the one and only Google. Having to compete against a herd of geeky genius seniors with zilch knowledge of how computers work, you know their internship would be one long interesting adventure. Read more »
I was invited by Cincescape to attend an advanced screening of “White House Down” yesterday. I’ve been wanting to watch White House Down for while so the invitation came in the most perfect time especially since Cinescape informed us we are at the first screening worldwide and not only in Kuwait.
White House Down, starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is a movie about a group of Terrorist who seize the White House on an just another ordinary day and taking the President, Jamie Foxx, hostage to insure their demands are met while ex-soldier Channing Tatum, who happened to be visiting the White House that very same day on a job interview, tries to save the day and bring down the Terrorists while saving both the president and the soldier’s own daughter who is held hostage in the White House as well.
Does the plot sound familiar? It is almost like watching Olympus has fallen with a different cast, a different hero, a different child, and local terrorists instead of foreign ones. How do they compare? Well, Olympus has fallen is more serious and the president was a hostage, in White House Down the president is wearing his Nike Air Jordans and joining in the action hence the movie is definitely more humorous at the expense being a tad less serious.
It is a good movie nonetheless, with bombs fires fights blood and explosions everywhere. I wonder why Hollywood has moved on from obsessing about natural disasters levelling NYC with the ground to obsessing about the White House being seized, but if you had seen and liked Olympus has fallen and liked it you will like this one as well.
The movie is cut at vital scenes of course, mainly because the attack is triggered by the US withdrawing all armed forces from the Middle East and how Arabs are not happy, I think they are not happy I’m not sure because the Arab’s opinion was of course chopped off and I wouldn’t know what I missed until I get the DVD, which is definitely joining on my DVD shelves when its out.

Superman was my favourite childhood superhero. I grew up watching Superman movies, one movie in particular the Superman III we watched over and over and over again whenever we had a meal. My father was a big Superman fan and he bought us all the VHS tapes except for Superman III which he recorded off KTV2 on our VHS video. After Christopher Reeve, no one could fill in his Superman shoes, and after watching Man of Steel, I personally believe no one can. Read more »
I remember seeing the trailer of Now You See Me before watching one of the movies earlier this past May. When I saw what they were up to -in the trailer- I knew I wanted to watch it ASAP! For the past few weeks whenever the Top US Box Office segment comes on TV between programs and I watch the rating of The Call, I tell myself that this sounds like an excellent movie and I must watch it if it ever made it to Kuwait’s cinema. The movie was released in Kuwait on the 21st of March, a day before it was released in the USA and as soon as I saw the actors and the trailers I knew I was in for a good movie so I couldn’t wait to see it. I saw it Thursday night and I have to say I enjoyed it very very much.

I’ve always complained from the armies of young children usually present in every movie I go to in Kuwait. Either teenagers who would yell, scream, or think they enriching the movie experience with their vulgar catcalls or the babies or toddlers who scream bloody murder or get bored and start whining. The thing I love about Peter Jackson’s adaptations of LOTR is that its consistency with the actual book. You see it as you’ve read it with very minor changes here and there. In my humble opinion the LOTR movie trilogy was one of the most successful book-movie adaptations ever therefore when I saw that The Hobbit was going to be shown at Grand Cinema on 13 December, I knew exactly where I would be spending my Thursday evening.
I loved every single one of the three LOTR movies. I’ve seen the extended version of each over and over again. When The Hobbit began, with the same soundtrack as the three LOTR, I almost cried. Watching Frodo, Gandalf, Elrond, and Smeagol again on screen again felt really good. I enjoyed every scene and as expected from Peter Jackson The Hobbit didn’t disappoint at all. It was quite funny actually if you compare it to the other LOTR movies.
The movie is long but I wish it was longer. I hope there is another extended version that I can buy on DVD. The good news is that The Hobbit will be a movie trilogy as well with the next film coming out on 2013 so we won’t have to wait long. If you are a fan of LOTR you will love The Hobbit. If you aren’t a fan then it might bore you so don’t waste your time.
