Recipe: Very Easy Very Yummy Beans Salad

By | July 2, 2011

When I was in college my mother made this version of the beans salad at home. I was so in love with it I made them make me a bowl of Beans Salad for lunch every single day for an entire college course. I would come home every day for a bowl of Beans Salad and I would eat nothing else for lunch but that bowl. I still love this salad dearly and I can make it in under 5 minutes.

You don’t even need many ingredients. Frozen Green beans. Canned red kidney beans and butter beans. A red pepper. Mustard, olive oil, lime juice, salt, and black pepper.

First bring a pan of salted water to the boil. While you are doing so wash and slice the green pepper into long thin strips. Into the bowl.

Drain the Beans and wash them. When my mother saw me eating the beans daily she used rehydrated beans and kept them in the fridge for me instead of my using canned ones.

Easy mo? Now Get the frozen green beans and boil them for 2-3 minutes. You don’t want to boil them too much so they don’t go soggy and they would keep their crunch. You can also microwave them.

Give it a quick wash with cold water so it cools down.

Put all the beans together over the green pepper slices.

Bs you are done. All is left is the salad dressing. Just add a little bit of mustard into a small tiny bowl.

Cover the mustard with a generous amount of lime juice. The more the merrier.

Add a dash of olive oil.

Whisk every thing up then pour over the salad.

Ta da! Five minutes and you have an easy vegetarian nutritious salad dish that could double as a main dish! A good hint would be to make it a day before because it tastes MUCH BETTER the next day.

Checking into the Diet Ninja’s Boot Camp

By | July 2, 2011

Ba6reeq, Kabat, Dobb, Big Momma’s House Suit. Yukozona (yes the wrestler may he RIP).

Since I left my LoFat diet in February and for some reason I gained a massive amount of weight even though my food intake didn’t change at all. Therefore something has to be done about it. I am tired of being overweight, of my new clothes not fitting me, of being the subject of vicious ridicule -first line of the post-. Hence I turned to the Fahad The Diet Ninja for help.

As i am one of the pickiest eaters in the world who is also a fussy vegetarian I find drafting a high protein low in carb meals very challenging. Fahad however drafted me 14 days diet plan. I must say it feels like entering a fat boot camp would be like. I am not allowed to cheat, not even with a tiny bite. There would be no falling off the wagon. and at the end of the dark tunnel of the 14 days I would be allowed a free meal. I must also exercise 3 times a week.

What am I going to do? Well, I will try to be as innovative as possible with the dishes shensawee b3d Here is the diet plan first, then comes the Exercise… For 14 days this is what I am going to eat only:

  • 7 AM Wake up and Drink 500 mls of Water. No problem.
  • 7:30 AM Breakfast: Two eggs baked or boiled, no oil. Half a cup of Baby Carrots, White tea.
  • 12:30 PM Snack: 1 container Fat Free Yoghurt, 1 Sesame Bar. White Tea.
  • 4:30 PM Lunch: 1/2-cup of cooked legumes or beans (fresh NOT CANNED). 100 grams (1/2 packet) of low-fat Valbreso Feta Cheese. Bowl of green veggies (ONLY GREEN VEGGIES- Dressing*: vinegar & 1/2 freshly squeezed lemon. 1/2-cup of Pomegranates. White Tea.
  • 9:30-10:30 (no earlier than that) Dinner: Plain small frozen yogurt with Raspberries & Blackberries *ONLY*

Exercise? 30 minutes 3 times a week.

Also, I have a great idea to move my muscles. You see, since I have a big gap between lunch and dinner without a snack which I know I will use to obsess about food if I sit on my couch only, I will take that gap in time and GO SHOPPING… merciless, relentless, wear your crocks and walk up every single store in the avenues kind of shopping. Its like travelling and shopping daily, only I would draft a plan for the clothes I would want to wear and try them on, aim for a dress size smaller which I will -insha2 Allah- look better into at the end of the 14 days! At day 14 I will buy whatever I perfect plus an outfit to wear on my celebratory free day dinner. This will keep me motivated to the max.

As an added bonus, I will start the diet on Sunday, 3 July. I will keep an online Journal on my blog with pictures. To maximize the motivation my free meal at the end of the fourteen days boot camp will take place on the 17th of July, which is my birthday. So yes, the outfit I will choose will be my free meal AND birthday dinner outfit 😀

I don’t want to start a new year of my life being fatter than I was last year. The thirties are about looking better than the twenties, NOT looking like an over sized barrel.

So Diet Ninja, I am wrapping this post up by telling you I am going grocery shopping for your boot camp supplies, Sensei :p I hope I do not let you down. Thank you for helping me out 😀

The Guten Free Campaign Response…

By | June 23, 2011

To be frank when I posted about the Dining Gluten-Free in Kuwait Campaign (post) and emailed everyone I wasn’t very optimistic. I knew many would’t even read through the first lines of the email and won’t care. To my surprise and to my sheer joy the restaurants response was very encouraging indeed! I made a difference, WE made a difference, if I was able to have one restaurant help me out I would have called the campaign a success but so far those restaurants do offer or would offer gluten free options…

  • Chocolate & Macaroon, All the macaroons are gluten free and more gluten free options are being developed and will be provided soon. The french toast is NOT gluten free just yet sadly that was a misunderstanding.
  • Crumbs Bakery can bake gluten free cake if provided with the gluten free flour.
  • Munch BBQ can provide the BBQ grill with gluten free pizza if given a notice in advance. They have been offering that option for the past 2 years. Their pizzas are lovely by the way 😀
  • My fellow blogger Pink Girl asked Ms. Catherine the owner of the newly Organica Pasta & Pizza if they provide any gluten free dishes and she said they can provide gluten free pasta.
  • I am also waiting for updates from 3 very popular restaurants who promised me to have a print out of the gluten free items in their menu as a little gluten free menu. It should be done within this coming week and I will post about it the moment I get the confirmation.
  • Thanks to every single restaurant on the list above. God bless you!

Thanks to my fellow bloggers Frankom, Pink Girl, Um 3azooz, Chocolate & Chocolate, 3ateeja, and Froyo Nation for their support… you guys rock 😀

Thank to my fellow Tweeps for spreading the cause @Madame_Umm_C, @Inspirationsbys,  @fouz_d, @FatmahD, @chocoo0, and @Zazuu007 … thank you for the retweets :)

As for me, I am not going to stop. Every new restaurant I try I will ask them for the possibility of providing Gluten-Free dishes (like Pink Girl did). Every recipe I add I will make sure it would have a gluten-free option if possible (like Um 3azooz promised)… there is still time for change, it can be done overnight or over decades if it has to, but it will be made, and I, my fellow bloggers, readers, and tweeps, I am after that change. I will make it happen.

10 Diet Ruining Irresistible Temptations

By | June 22, 2011

1- Breakfast at work. We do’t usually do breakfast at work with big gatherings and hoopla but it so happens that the first day of your diet always coincides with having breakfast at work. Which ruins the entire weekly plan :p

2- Family Gatherings. You have been good all week. Then comes the weekend with your family gathering looming. You lecture your self and say you will eat two spoonfuls of this and than and nothing else. Then your mama’s hot apple cake is sitting there and it smells so good and you already ate the entire fattoush bowl at lunch and oopsy daisy you are tumbling out of the wagon into the abyss!

3- Food Ads and Brochures. Is it just my imagination that the day you start dieting those damn brochures appear out of no where on your door step and newspaper’boxes and even at your cars window with yummy pictures screaming eat me eat me I am a phone call away?

4- Living with a man. They just can’t stop eating, 24 hours, the most delicious food ever and they have testosterone to the rescue. What is a girl to do? Wear a blindfold?

5- Food gifts from abroad. If you receive a mountain f chocolate from Geneva or a carton of the latest flake from London, do you think it would wait four months for you to end your diet? Really? Yeah I didn’t think so either.

6- Celebratory Invitations. We celebrate by food. A’s birthday, B’s Graduation. C’s promotion. You go into a restaurant in the middle of the diet week, you try to stick to salad and water… they suddenly that gooey chocolate cake is in the middle and you take a bite and everything is ruined for you :(

7- Courses with Buffets. You go to a course without having breakfast. Then the break comes and you try to stick to your diet by looking at the buffet spread ahead of you. Luscious croissants, gleaming danish, golden samboosas. You try to resist then you realize you won’t have this buffet every day and your defenses crumble and in no time you are waving bye bye to your diet.

8- Twitter & Bog Posts. Well I am guilty as charged. Its just too damn hard to not crave something badly when the pictures are so graphic and the description says good and yummy. 7ram :'(

9- New Restaurants. It so happens that restaurants decide to bloom like mushrooms, one after the other, exactly when I start my diet. Everyone is talking about try restaurant X or Y. We are human after all, we say we need to try it to get it out of our system. Then you try it and your diet takes a suicidal jump out of the window.

10- Coming home after grocery shopping. What’s a dieting girl to do when she returns home to find her coffee table filled with all the forbidden goodies shown in the picture above? You can resist for a day or two waiting for them to vanish, but eventually your hands will betray you and grab a piece of chocolas with one hand while strangling the diet with the other.

What usually ruins your next Sunday’s diet plans?

Solo Pizza Napolitana’s Calzone…

By | June 10, 2011

I am not really a fan of calzone, my husband is. So whenever we are in a pizzeria he opts to order a calzone while I stick to my pizza. The last time we were in Solo Pizza (post) however he ordered their calzone for the first time and I stole half of his calzone :p I also tweeted about it and the Fahad Diet Ninja wanted to see the inside of it so I promised him a post. Here it Read more »

10 food items I’ve eliminated out of my life

By | May 17, 2011

1- Croissants: They are filled with fat and carbs. They provide zero nutritional value. They taste amazing and heavy but 2 minute after I am done I suddenly feel very hungry and need to eat some more. Absolutely no need for them in my life.

2- Fried Samboosa: I am a sucker for Samboosas. If I am fasting and there is a platter of Samboosa on the futoor table I would devour the entire thing. I also gain weight from air so I have resorted to making my samboosas at home with low fat fillings and baking them in the oven instead of frying them.

3- Fruit Juices: This was a quite recent decision but I don’t really regret it. I am not a fan of fruit juices since they are nothing but excess sugar. Lemonade is an exception though.

4- Artificial Sweetners: I’ll either have real sugar in moderation or have none at all. There is no need to poison my body with those chemicals, no matter how “natural” the source is. Period.

5- Diet Coke: Poison. Pure poison that has a weird after taste and actually prevents weight loss and contributes to the feelings of anxiety and depression. Mo naq9een. Water and lemonade are fine. 7up Free maybe once in a blue moon. But no more Diet Coke.

6- 7abb o Mokasarat: I’ve never been a fan of 7abb or seeds or nuts in all kinds and flavours. I do not see the need to add a ton of excess sodium with no apparent nutritional value to my body. Plus there is no need to get a habit of passing the time with chewing on something salty a fattening.

7- Packaged potato chips. There is only one brand I allow myself to have, which is the ready salted Real McCoys from the UK. I eat it once every 3 trips maybe. Plus the salted Hula Hoops which I must have on the plane back home. That’s about it. Other than that I avoid the chips like the plaque.

8- Jelly Beans: I love love LOVE Jelly Beans. If I have the right flavours I would simply devour and entire bag. But they are nothing but chewy sugary drops with absolutely no nutritional value and they somehow cause me stomach cramps.

9- Balalee6: Although a favourite childhood dish of mine I came to the conclusion that the taste is not really worth the damage. Sugar, fat, and wheat in excessive amounts only to make you feel hungrier afterwards, esh7aqa?

10- Pickles, 6orshi, and Achar: The way they smell, the way they look and feel, the way they damage your stomach, ugh. Never ever EVER!

10 Tips for a Successful Diet

By | May 14, 2011

Since I’ve been dieting for the past 20 years and given that I have gained some weight recently I am recapping on my diet rules and I want to share them with you…

1- The moment you wake up in the morning drink a cup of water, sipping slowly. Drink at least 8 cups during the day because fat burns better in the presence of water.

2- When I am starving, I drink a cup of water first. Sometimes the body mixes up the thirst and hunger signals and it will fill me up until its time for my next meal.

3- Do some exercise. Why? Because if you don’t do any exercise you will be tempted to cheat. Exercising suddenly eliminates the crazy craving and the effort you put into it makes you feel guilty about eating and cheating.

4- When you are really hungry and cannot take it any more, drink a medium Turkish coffee. You will feel full for hours, as we say in Q8 “tachbed”.

5- If you are eating toast don’t make it into a sandwich, it will finish quickly. Make it a two open faced sandwiches. Also tear off tiny pieces of bread and eat them instead of taking huge bites so they will last longer.

6- Pinapples are my best friends. They burn fat like a snap and they taste amazing. It works for me any ways.

7- If I have to eat out I stick to having salads from the menu without the dressing. I add a little splash of vinegar and a tea spoon of olive oil and enjoy it.

8- Diet drinks are an absolute no-no. There are some studies that says that they actually prevent weight loss. No Diet coke for me. Water is more than enough.

9- I shall eat nothing artificial: No biscuits even if they are low fat. No cornflakes. No Low Fat or Diet food. No dried soup. If it ain’t natural or packaged in the factory from natural sources -milk mathalan- I am not going to put it in my body.

10- When I feel my stomach is rumbling in hunger, I feel happy. A dietitian once told me that when I hear the rumble it means my body is actually burning the fat right now. Burn away my body, even If I keep tossing and turning all night in hunger.
