In the very last days of January I had the chance to get a sneak peek inside the location of a new bakery in Kuwait City that was due to open very soon. The name is Days Boutique, an artisan desserts bakery located in Dar Al-Awadhi right next door to the famous Karak Gholam. The decor of the coming-soon Days Boutique is quite lovely, modern with a huge studded revolving door, patterned tiles, and endless gorgeous light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Read more »

The other day I was hiding at home from the sudden cold weather that descended upon us, unannounced, when the door bell rang and  two big bags bearing the unmistakable funky logo of Buttercup’s bakery. The bags were heavy with plenty of sweet treats and goodies inside which in turn means a lot of pictures and a lot of sugar in this post, you’ve been warned! Earlier this week, I’ve seen Ansam cooking a dish on instagram using quinoa bread she got from J’s Bakery. Read more »

Just before the start of the Eid holiday Heil & Zafa’arn, a local bakery selling traditional Kuwaiti desserts and sweets, sent me a big basket filled with their goodies. The basket had a greeting card attached to it with the words “Eid Breakfast” printed on it in Arabic, and a lavish Eid breakfast basket it was indeed! Read more »

Heavenly Pies from The Pastry Shop

By | July 25, 2013

1-1

It was during the Holy month of Ramadan of last year that I’ve come to taste the scrumptious pies of The Pastry Shop! Excellent pies, with fresh ingredients and a flakey light crust and overall melt-in-your-mouth after the first bite feeling. This year I’ve had the pleasure of being sent more pies from The Pastry Shop, freshly baked and just out of the over, and they’ve been grazing my after iftar tea table ever since their arrival. Delightful Desserts from Cucinare Bakery

Cucinare Bakery is a new bakery that opened up quite recently in Kuwait. Cucinare is is co-owned by the beloved Chef Hanouf Al-Balhan and the sweet Ala’a Al-Jarki and is located in Sha’ab yet still in its soft opening phase. Last week I received a big purple and green bag with two Cucinare products to try: the seasonal berries cake and a cookies raspberry chocolate tart. Read more »

Aunt Marie’s Salted Pecan Caramels

By | June 16, 2013

1-1

When I passed by Shakshooka farmers market a while ago (post), one of the things I got for myself was a jar of wrapped sweets. I frankly just grabbed it when it was laid on the table when I knew it was “caramels” and I’m not a big fan of caramels. Fudge, yes, caramel OK but my husband is a devoted fan so I thought I’d get that for him.  Read more »

Or Bakery Shop in Burj Jassim

I’ve been a fan of Or Bakery ever since I’ve bitten into my very first chocolate brownie with an oozing liquid chocolate centre (post). Many chocolate brownies later, Or remained my favourite Kuwaiti-made chocolate destination and I always wondered why they didn’t open their own shop. I think 2013 deserves to be called the year where Kuwaiti businesses expanded from homes to actual stores, for Or Bakery has finally opened up a shop in Burj Jassim.  Read more »

The Chocolate Hazelnut Cake from The Blue Bakery

A few weeks back I saw a picture of a very delicious looking chocolate cake on instagram, it was the The Chocolate aux Noisettes, or the Chocolate Hazelnut cake by The Blue Bakery whose dessert pictures are heart-wrenching to say the least. Ever since I saw the cake’s picture, I couldn’t get it out of my head and whenever I saw another picture of that succulent looking cake I would start tasting and smelling chocolate hazelnut instantly. I knew it only a matter of time before Read more »

I always feel a warm sensation in my heart when a small home-based Kuwaiti business grows and opens up a shop, especially if it’s a distinguished and different business like Madame Sucre and who doesn’t love Madame Sucre gorgeously wrapped succulent desserts?  Read more »

The Pastry Shop’s Strawberry Tarts

By | March 31, 2013

tpsmst-007One of the desserts I’m very fond of is the strawberry tart. I’ve loved it ever since I can remember, we used to buy it from a bakery we used to call The French Oven that’s long closed by now. I usually only eat the strawberries with the custard filling and discard of the bottom pie, it’s always too thick, dry, and filled with unnecessary Read more »
