How Do You Eat Your Cereal?

Areia Branca By | December 5, 2012

I love cereal. Growing up, I can’t remember my childhood mornings without remembering a bowl of cereal. In the 80’s I believe we only had Kellogg’s, at least I don’t remember the Nestle ones, so Kellogg’s cereal in particular are my Read more »

London Xmas Lights 2012

By | December 2, 2012

For the past decade or so, I’ve made sure that I am in London during Xmas time. I personally believe its the best time to visit London: Decorated shops and streets, lights everywhere, amazing new merchandise to buy, happy -often disgrunted- shoppers milling around, gift wrapping mania, and Read more »

Blast from the Past: Prizes Underneath Soda Caps

By | September 11, 2012

A very long time ago, back in the early and mid 80’s, we enjoyed drinking soft drinks for two reasons: the taste of course and for the bottle caps. You see, most of the time there were Read more »

Picture of the Week: Street Signs Magnets

By | September 10, 2012

Whenever I’m abroad specifically in London I try to purchase a few magnets bearing the signs of my favorite streets. I hang them everywhere, my fridge, my work cubicle cupboards, my home office. What I enjoy most is the little reality break they provide for me. I’d be immersed in my work and suddenly I’d lift my eyes and I’d see the street sign magnet and right there and then I’m transferred there in an instant.

Today it happened, I was working at home and suddenly I saw the Carnaby street sign. I was momentarily back in the hustling and bustling street, just stepped out from Liberty to be hit with a croissant smell from Pret on my right, the sound of the guitar playing on my left from the street performers, and the lights dancing in the distance from all the decoration while people are milling below and all along the street. I so wish to be there right now.

So I grabbed my camera and took a shot of this street sign, capturing the essence of my wish. Whenever I look at it I remember my day dream and wish for an escape. I can’t wait to be back there.

If you, at this moment, can be wherever you want to be in the world. Where would you be?

Blast 4m the Past: MSX King Valley Game & Ending

By | July 5, 2012

One of the ten most popular games of MSX in the old days was probably King Valley. You know him, the little adventurer who goes inside the pyramid and collects orbs that open up a gateway to the next room while trying to dodge mummies. We called it King’s Valley even though we didn’t speak much Read more »

Ramadan Preparations: The Samboosa Making

By | July 3, 2012

I’m a person who cannot resist samboosa. Given that I can polish off a platter of samboosa without looking twice, I limit myself to having it during Futoor in Ramadan and having it only baked instead of fried. Therefore, I have this Read more »

I’m Not Called Danderma for Nothing…

By | May 22, 2012

There is a good reason I chose Danderma as my nickname -many good reasons actually-. The main reason however is my never ending relationship with ice cream. I can proudly say that I am totally, hopelessly, ruthelessly, head-over-heels in love with anything ice cream. Read more »

Blast from the Past: The Rambo Game on MSX

By | May 8, 2012

In the 80’s two things were a big hit: Rambo and the MSX. It is no wonder that MSX had a Rambo game back then and given that I was -and still is- a Rambo fan I loved the game so much. So much in fact that I think the cartridge was fried from being overly used and it stopped working a short while after we Read more »

Picture of the Week: The Lock

By | May 7, 2012

Last week I saw this door in Bait Al-Sadu and I was mesmerized. The fine retro detailing on this door is so pretty, the structured glass so old, I almost wanted to take it home with me. Back in the day the attention to detail was fascinating. You’d see the art in a simple door, in a window, in the gateway of the house, in a balcony, in some concrete extensions here and there. Now adays most houses looks like boxes with holes for windows and souless design.

Don’t you just love this door?

Blast from the Past: Quantum Leap

By | May 3, 2012

When I was a child in the early 80’s, and back then KTV2 showed the latest blockbusters in a timely manner, there was this show where a guy, Sam, used to live in the shoes of someone from a different time and different problem and try and solve their problems.

The only thing I remembered was the guy’s name was Sam. I remembered the other guy who either timed him or enabled him to go from one place to another, and I remember loving the show to bits. Years later as I began to speak and understand English I remembered the show, the fascination that engulfed me while watching it, the different stories and lives and experiences.

I wanted to watch the show again, I really did, but I’ve searched high and low for its name to no avail. I always confused it with the show “saint” which also was shown at around the same time. Not until I was watching the latest episode of DHW that I recognized Bree’s lawyer as Sam from the show of my childhood! Only much older and more winkled!

Thanks to Google, 2 minutes later and I got the name of the show, Quantum Leap! Sam’s real name is Scott Bakula and his most noted role was actually that of SAm’s in Quantum Leap!

Needless to say I’m going to waste my entire weekend watching one amazing retro show insha2 Allah. Thank god I found it for I had been missing it terribly.

Do you remember Quantum leap?

Picture of the Week: The Mailbox

By | April 16, 2012

Even though the mail service in Kuwait is beyond disgraceful. Even though I’ve never ever received post cards and pen pal letters from friends abroad which I’ve longed for all my life. Even though I know these blue boxes are merely just street decor but I’ve to say that I love them.

I love the sight of them, I love their violent blue color and the little white top area. I think they were designed in the era of the Kuwaiti boom back in the 60’s and somehow they still have that old Kuwaiti air filled with hope of a bright future. Mind you, a country whose mail system is so dysfunctional that even Nigeria has complained about us! Thank god for emails! But there is still hope. Maybe one day, maybe?

Don’t you just love those blue boxes? Have you ever dreamed of walking to that mailbox and dropping a nicely addressed letter to someone and it will actually reach them? Or maybe have a little mailbox at the gate of your home where your mail arrives every morning, maybe even little promotional packages or birthday gifts and cards? Is that so much to dream off?

Help: How and Where to Convert my VHS tapes into DVD?

By | April 15, 2012

I love my old video, I really do. I have no intention of letting it go anytime soon. However I have several contents on old VHS video tapes that I want to convert into computer friendly format: mp3, mp4, burn on dvd, or maybe upload to youtube and share with others.

There was a store in Jabriya that helped me out last year but they took like 3 KD and one week to convert the one tape I wanted and this year they have closed down. My husband claims we have some sort of device he can connect between the video and the computer which helps in the transformation but he has to “unearth it” and given that I know for sure that such device doesn’t exist in his possessions I am not willing to wait.

Do you have any idea how or where I can get those VHS tapes on my pc ASAP? Help please!

Ramadan: A 100 days and Counting…

By | April 11, 2012

Someone who obviously loves Ramadan very much has made the world know today that Ramadan is only a 100 days away! Horray!

I love Ramadan. I think its the best time of year. I love the fatoosh on futoor table, the tea estekanas after futoor sleeping on the couch with the droopy eye lids. I love our pre-futoor ritual of watching the IT Ramadan show and commenting on it on Twitter. Even though this year we might watch it via Instagram etha Allah 3a6ana 3omor o 9a7a o 3afiya insha2 Allah.

Ya rab et3oodna ya rab. This year its going to be on 19 July! 2 days after my birthday which I suppose I can disguise as a friendly graish 😉 I was actually born in 5 Ramadan in the year 1980 so next year insah2 Allah my birthday will be during Ramadan. I wonder if it will be on the fifth 3ad? Allah y36ena 3omor o y3oodna!

Are you excited? I am. I truly am. I think I will start fasting now just to start living the Ramadan atmosphere.
